Planning a wedding can quickly become expensive, but it doesn’t have to drain your savings. Many couples want a beautiful celebration without breaking the bank but it can seem impossible once you discover how expensive everything is in the wedding industry. The key is knowing where to cut costs without sacrificing the entire experience and prioritizing what matters the most to you. Through this guide, we hope to help guide you on practical ways to save money on your wedding while still making it memorable and special.

Choose the Right Venue
As a locally owned wedding venue, we see in most instances that the venue often takes up the largest portion of a wedding budget. However, there are lots of other options to think about besides popular venues, but consider the pros and cons and the hidden costs.
Public parks or gardens: Many allow weddings for a small fee or donation. Have a backup plan for rain though if you choose this option!
Community centers or local churches: These spaces are affordable and often come with basic amenities. However, it can take a LOT of décor to cover up an ugly space, and that can get expensive
Backyard weddings: Hosting at home or a friend’s place can be a great option if you're having a smaller wedding and have all the logistics covered. Remember to plan for porta potties, tent rental, tables, chairs, and décor.
Off-season or weekday dates at a Venue: Venues usually offer discounts during less popular times. With a venue, the biggest perk is that you're doing way less work and they often include things that you won't find at any other location, including wedding décor! We include decor and many other things in all of our wedding packages, including an amazing getting ready space.
Booking a venue that fits your budget from the start helps avoid costly surprises later. But just be sure to count all the costs going towards it.
Limit the Guest List
Every guest adds to the cost of food, seating, and favors. Keeping your guest list smaller can significantly reduce expenses. Focus on inviting close family and friends who matter most. This approach not only saves money but also creates a more intimate atmosphere.
Simplify the Catering
Food and drinks can be a major expense. Here are ways to keep catering costs down:
Buffet or family-style meals instead of plated dinners reduce staffing needs.
Limit alcohol options to beer, wine, and a signature cocktail rather than a full bar.
Choose seasonal and local ingredients to lower food costs.
Consider food trucks or casual catering for a fun and affordable alternative.
Ask your caterer for budget-friendly menu options that don’t compromise quality. We have some amazing local caterers we highly recommend!

DIY Decorations and Invitations
Handmade touches add personality and save money on your wedding budget. You don’t need to be a craft expert to create beautiful decorations:
Use simple floral arrangements with seasonal blooms. Picking flowers outside and using what nature gives us is great, IF you have that option. Otherwise, you can often buy flowers in bulk at box stores, but some local florists offer this option as well, like ours! The Flower Village
Make your own centerpieces using candles, greenery, or thrifted items. This can turn into a fun experience too when done with your family and/or bridesmaids!
Design and print your own invitations or use digital invites to cut printing and postage costs.
DIY projects take time but can be rewarding and budget-friendly.
Rent or Borrow Instead of Buying
Many wedding items are used only once. Renting or borrowing can be a smart way to save:
Rent dresses, tuxedos, and accessories instead of buying new.
Borrow decorations, tableware, or furniture from friends or family.
Hire emerging photographers who offer lower rates. There are many local emerging photographers who are great at what they do, and some that are experienced that want to be affordable, so their prices are lower. Just remember that your memories will last forever on film, so be cautious who you choose for a photographer.
This approach reduces waste and keeps costs manageable.
Prioritize What Matters Most
Decide which parts of the wedding are most important to you and allocate your budget accordingly. For example, if photography is a priority, spend more there and save on flowers or favors. If the venue ambiance matters, choose a simpler menu.
Having clear priorities helps you make informed decisions and avoid overspending on less important details.
Using Technology to Save Time & Money on your Wedding Budget
Technology can simplify planning and reduce costs:
Use wedding planning apps to track expenses and deadlines.
Create a wedding website to share details and RSVP options, saving on paper.
Use online marketplaces to find affordable decor and attire.
These tools help you stay organized and avoid last-minute costly purchases.
Negotiate with Vendors
Don’t hesitate to ask vendors for discounts or package deals. Many are willing to work within your budget if you communicate clearly. Consider:
Bundling services like photography and videography.
Booking vendors during off-peak times.
Asking for a la carte options instead of full packages.
Negotiation can lead to significant savings without lowering quality.
Limit Extras and Favors
Extras like elaborate favors, expensive guest books, or elaborate entertainment add up quickly. Focus on meaningful but simple touches:
Personalized thank-you notes instead of costly favors.
A playlist of your favorite songs rather than hiring a live band.
Skip extras that don’t add much to the guest experience.
This keeps your budget focused on essentials.
Plan Early and Stay Organized
Starting your planning early gives you time to research, compare prices, and avoid rush fees. Keep a detailed budget spreadsheet and track all expenses. Staying organized helps you spot areas to save and prevents overspending.
